2006 NJCAA Region I Cross Country Championships

On October 27, Tempe Kiwanis Park again served as the backdrop for the 2006 edition of the NJCAA Region I Cross Country Championships. The Central Arizona College Vaqueros claimed the women’s and men’s team titles. Samantha Hatch (Paradise Valley Community College) was declared the individual women’s winner, after attempting to tie with teammate Heather West; Tyson David (Central Arizona College) surged ahead in the final meters to claim the individual men’s title (click here for meet results).

Next up for the Arizona qualifiers is the NJCAA National Cross Country Championships in El Paso, Texas on November 4.

Austin, Texas revisited

A work-related conference prompted a recent visit to Austin, Texas. I had previously visited the self-proclaimed “Live Music Capital of the World” in 2002 for what was then called the Motorola Austin Marathon (now known as the AT&T Austin Marathon). In 2002, I was still using 35 mm film; this time, I had an inexpensive point-and-shoot compact digital. It was interesting to compare the photographic results 4 ½ years apart…

Top of Utah Marathon

As a desert dweller, I rarely have an opportunity to see snow. So, one could imagine my surprise when I looked out the hotel window in Logan, Utah, and saw snow flurries on the first day of Autumn 2006.

Fortunately, the storm cleared out overnight, and the 8th Annual NordicTrack Top of Utah Marathon took place under cool and sunny conditions. Utah became state # 15 on my 50 state marathon tour… State # 16 will have to wait until next year; my plans for the rest of 2006 primarily focus on cross country and shorter road races…

San Diego Road Trip

Year after year, hundreds of Arizona runners make the trek to San Diego for the America’s Finest City Half Marathon. As training through the summer in the Valley becomes longer and hotter, spending a weekend near the beach in late August seems like a perfect end-of-summer ritual.

Bondurant School of High Performance Driving

Attending the four-day Bondurant Grand Prix Road Racing course both fulfilled a lifelong dream and let me know how much more I need to learn about driving an automobile fast for competition. We spent the first three days of the class driving the Corvette C5, and the fourth day driving a Formula Ford. I definitely need to work on my heel-toe downshifting. The class was everything I expected, and more… I had all four tires in the dirt on a couple occasions, but managed to avoid hitting anything…

My next opportunity to drive a Formula Ford will be during “Lap the Oval” day at Phoenix International Raceway, in November. It is a non-competitive event, but should be a lot of fun; I’ve attended races at PIR since grade school, and have always wanted to drive on that track…

4th of July 2006

What better way is there to watch 4th of July fireworks in Phoenix than from the roof of a high rise in the Camelback Corridor? Friends and teammates were treated to a 360 degree view of the city, and close proximity to a couple downtown Phoenix fireworks shows…

2006 AT&T USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships — Sunday

It seems somewhat fitting that the 2006 USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships would end as it began, with a rain delay. The dreary conditions did not slow down the competitors. After the meet resumed, several world leading times fell in rapid succession.

Lisa Galaviz, a standout runner at both Centennial High School and ASU, captured her first national championship, with a victory in the 3000 meter steeplechase.

Day 4 of the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships was punctuated by thrilling photo finishes in the men’s 400 and 400 meter hurdle races, as well as a dominating performance by Sanya Richards in the women’s 400 meters.

2006 AT&T USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships — Friday

Marion Jones and Justin Gatlin grabbed the headlines, for their wins in the 100 meters. The schedule for Day 3 of the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships was lengthy, due to the scheduling of make-up races from Day 2. All three rounds of the 100 meters, which normally take place over two days, were compressed into one.

Distance events dominated the evening schedule, where both the men’s and women’s 5,000 and 10,000 meter races were contested. Tucson resident Bernard Lagat, competing in his first USA championship after becoming an American citizen, sprinted away from a loaded field in the final straightaway to win the 5000 meters.

2006 AT&T USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships — Thursday

Severe weather forced a schedule delay and an early end to Day 2 of the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships. In both the mid-afternoon and early evening, fans and athletes evacuated the Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium, on the campus of Indiana University / Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI), and headed for adjacent buildings and parking structures, as high winds and heavy rain battered the city.

Among the athletes with Arizona connections competing on Thursday, former Brophy Prep standout Alex Mason, now competing for Georgetown University, placed second in the junior men’s 3000 meter steeplechase.

Lapping Session

Our intrepid band of kart racers made it back to Bondurant for a “lapping session.” This class provided more seat time than the introductory course, and allowed some passing. The two hour session went quickly. I imagine we’ll be back for more…

Fargo Marathon

When I mentioned to friends, especially to those who grew up in or around North Dakota, that I was traveling to Fargo to run a marathon, the overwhelming response was “why?” Those who hadn’t been to Fargo before would invariably mention a line or two from the Coen Brothers’ movie. Despite the snickers, the Scheel’s Fargo Marathon has already gathered a great deal of positive word-of-mouth, in only its second year of existence.

Approximately 6,000 cheerful entrants in 4 events (marathon, half marathon, marathon relay, and 5K) eagerly anticipated the start in front of the Fargo Dome on Saturday morning, May 20. Skies were overcast, and we were doused by a brief shower, about 10 minutes before the 8:00 AM starting time. I was more concerned about the wind, which blew from north to south at 20-25 mph. We would have the wind at our backs for the first 10 miles, but we would be running into it coming back, if it persisted through the morning.

Sure enough, the wind kept blowing throughout what was otherwise a great day for a marathon. It seemed like entire neighborhoods turned out to volunteer or cheer on competitors. This year’s course, which meandered on bike paths along the Red River, and through charming commercial and tree-lined residential areas of Fargo and Moorehead, is generally flat and capable of producing fast times. My unscientific post-race poll seemed to indicate that quite a few participants achieved Boston qualifying times.

Lady Sun Devils — 2006 PAC-10 Track & Field Champions

Congratulations to the ASU women’s Track and Field team for capturing their first PAC-10 title in the program’s history.

Brooke Bennett, shown below competing in the steeplechase at the 2006 ASU Invitational, became the fifth Sun Devil to win the PAC-10 women’s steeplechase title, ahead of last year’s winner, Anna Masinelli. In the six-year history of the PAC-10 women’s steeplechase, ASU has claimed all of the conference titles.

On the men’s side, Aaron Aguayo picked up his third individual PAC-10 steeplechase crown, in a school record 8:35.04. Right behind Aguayo was teammate Ryan Warrenburg, who ran 8:39.01, the second fastest time in ASU history.

2006 Carlsbad 5000

Meseret Defar from Ethiopia, the 2004 Olympic champion at 5000 meters, set a pending world best for a road 5K at the Carlsbad 5000, on April 9. The quaint beach town of Carlsbad, north of San Diego, had another marvelous day for running. The masters’ races were run early in the morning under overcast skies. By noon, as the invitational competitors lined up to race, skies were clear and a gentle breeze blew from the north.
